I have been an antiquarian bookseller since 1975, specializing in art reference material. I am also a photographer, having studied with Walker Evans while a graduate student in American Studies at Yale in the early 1970s. While a graduate student, inspired by Evans's "American Photographs" (1938) I set out in the summer of 1974 to photograph America. The result of that extended road trip is a book (In Time We Shall Know Ourselves) and an exhibition organized by the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts in 2014, which opens at its sixth museum venue, The Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona Beach, January 20 and continues through April 15, 2017. My proposal for a second photo book has been accepted for publication by the University of Georgia Press. I will be bringing with me a preview of the second book (additional photographs from the 1974 road trip) to share with my ARLIS colleagues, many of whom already have a copy of the book published two years ago. My exhibition traveled to the Ogden Museum of Southern Art last summer, where ARLIS will be holding its convocation. Three of the photographs for my next book were taken in New Orleans during some very hot and humid days in August 1974.
