Bard Graduate Center
Library Director
New York
The Bard Graduate Center is a graduate research institute in New York City, offering MA and PhD degrees in the History of Design, Decorative Arts and Material Culture. While the academic programs are strictly scholarly, the library offers several events each year to students, faculty and staff that incorporate creative practice into what is, by definition, a traditional academic setting. These events give students the opportunity to engage with the library collection in new ways, help to foster community among students, faculty and staff, and provide needed creative outlets during times of high stress. Heather Topcik will talk about this ongoing series of events which include; Library Crafternoons, Edible Book Celebrations, and the Book Spine Poetry Project. She will discuss how these events have increased student engagement with the library staff and collection.
